If you were to put your life story to music, what genre would it be right now?

I’m wishing for some Alex DeGrassi or William Ackerman, Windham Hill style- soft and gentle. Bland.  Mellow, even-keeled.

The man-child is experiencing a true, classic country music life right now (you know- the blues, d-i-v-o-r-c-e, heartbreak, down and out kinda stuff- all twangy and incredibly messed up).

You?

My friend Dave is doing a month long series of posts on the holidays. For December 1 he started with Christmas cards.. each day has a music video to accompany the theme. For his first day he featured Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson singing “Ring of Fire” .  Perfect.  Go check it out here

You won’t be sorry. I love his offbeat humorous take on the frenzy that is Christmas.

Let’s Get it On August 31, 2009

Musicians have always written about love, often with eloquence and sensuousness.  Now days there are “artists” using plain nasty language to get their message across.  This duo from New Zealand, Flight of the Conchords, have settled for the middle ground….a quirkier approach to ‘getting it on’.    I’m happy to say that my more recently sexual experiences are nothing like this.

I bought a new iPod yesterday ( oops, not sex toys).  Deep purple, slim and wonderful. Though the description…..

Then I went on iTunes and got some new music.  Bill Withers, Stevie Wonder, The Meters, to name a few… rocking music!  I took the day off today… just because I could and I’m rocking out right now w/ my headset so as not to scare the kitty cats! Heading out shortly for a little fun and amusement on a Friday night! Enjoy

not the best recording of Cissy Strut but you get the vibes.

Over the last few days there has been a song theme running through some of the blogs.  It got me thinking about music and its place in our lives.  What song would you pick as your theme song?  For your personal life, or your blog.

Went to see Dr. John last night at an outdoor venue. It was hot as hell! But the Dr. looked cool and collected.   He looks pretty much as in this video, though skinnier and older.  He was dressed in a shimmery green suit, pants up to his ribcage and an orangish looking shirt.   His shoes were an animal skin loafer, white/grey.  I want to tell you, that man still has it going on!  He played for about two hours, frequently playing piano with his left hand and reaching around with right hand to play the organ. He played a range of music, featured some classic oldies, such as this one.  The crowd was largely older but they boogied as hardily as the younger set. There’s something special for me about seeing these ‘older’ musicians; maybe it’s  knowing that their time with us is limited.  I appreciate a wide range of music, and have contemporary musicians I enjoy but the older music just can’t be beat!

Good, no great music never dies.  Check out this video..  Can you spot the actor(s)? Is that Robert Stack?

NPR is doing a summer series on rock and roll.  This particular posting was about “Piano Pounders” and featured Fats Domino as well as Professor Longhair .

In case, like me, you wondered!

Amazingly, I couldn’t find Bringing in the Sheaves.

Have you planned your funeral yet? Picked a song, a scripture, a venue? Planned the after-service menu?

Here’s the song I want (as a long time but lapsed Episcopalian there is some humor in choosing something this ‘gospel-like’).. Close your eyes, as the scene from O’ Brother Where Art Thou is not part of my vision…. If I’m getting George Clooney I want him before I kick the bucket.
